(I do not know why, for "freebsd" x86_64 maps to "freebsd" and not "freebsd- amd64")
It could be that it's because nobody was compiling binaries on 64-bit at the beginning and they argued that 32-bit ones work on 64-bit platforms. But I might be wrong.
There is some confusion. Does $cpu=amd64 exist? What about for linux?
I don't know.
As far as I know, 64 bit linux/freebsd/kfreebsd use the same distributions ("amd64") for both Intel and AMD processors.
