Metapost label alignment etc.

Dear knights, I spent a few hours today with MetaPost and MetaFun, my first serious stab at Meta in many years, so I'm a virtual newbie (used PSTricks back in the LaTeX days). I am trying to basically duplicate the attached pdf graphic and need help with the following: 1. This code is pretty naive; how can I make it more efficient? Eg, can I make a global "scaled 1cm" declaration instead of repeating it so many times? 2. ConTeXt's alignment mechanism apparently does not work in MetaPost (alignment is commented); is there a workaround? ragged left needed for some labels. 3. What is the most efficient way to get labels to follow the diagonals as in the attached pdf? Any tips/trick will be appreciated! framed and align=no

I seem to have a problem with alignment in \framed; these are small examples with there outcome: \leftaligned{\framed[width=4cm,align=no]{xyz} "no" comes out to the left} \leftaligned{\framed[width=4cm,align=no]{\hfil xyz} "no" comes out in the middle} \leftaligned{\framed[width=4cm,align=middle]{\hfil xyz} "middle" comes out to the right} \leftaligned{\framed[width=4cm,align=right]{\hfil xyz} "right" comes out in the middle} \leftaligned{\framed[width=4cm,align=right]{xyz} "right" comes out to the left} I get the impression that although "align=no", there still is a \hfil put in at the right. Searched through the sources, especially core-rule.tex but could not find the right place; it is fairly complicated code, isn't it? Using \hfill to force the alignment is not an option, because I need that for overriding the alignment when using these alignments in macros. I would like very much to have "align=no" putting no glue, neither to the right nor to the left, thus making it different from "align=right". If I am right: 1. can someone point me to the point in the source where I can change things for the moment? 2. will this be changed then in the next release? Hans van der Meer

small caps italic and font switching inside math

Hello, I have to tiny questions: 1. How do I get small caps [bold] italic (except with the \definedfont[ec-lmxxx])? 2. I defined \molecule to be \def\molecule#1{$\rm#1$}, an usage example would be: \molecule{HSO_4^{-}} But how should I modify this it so that it would also work properly with examples such as: {\bfa A story about \molecule{SF_6}} {\scx A story about \molecule{SF_6}} {\bsb A story about \molecule{SF_6}} As a workaround I now keep hardcoding \molecule{\bsb SF_6}. [OT] Is Indesign CS 2 better than ConTeXt ?

OK, it is a big OFF TOPIC. Some notes * the Elements of Typographic Style was made with Indesign (true or false?) and the only words about TeX is an url (true or false ?) * indesign eat xml * there is an indesign server; maybe actually too much complex, but in the future? * I don't know if IDCS2 has some programming capabilities like ConTeXt Ofcourse : *IDCS2 come from Adobe, so it has the feature of latest pdf spec.; *IDCS2 is WYSIWYG * (...possibly many others...) But there is one important point: Can IDCS2 be view as candidate for automatic typesetting (xml->IDCS2->pdf) ? luigi

Index sorting again

Hello Hans, I'd like to remind the 2 persisting problems with the index sorting. 1. Numbers are sorted under A 2. Symbols are sorted under the first letter which follows. See the attached test file. Both these issues are independent on language and on the expansion type. Proposed solution: 1. Sort numbers into separate divisions 2. Sort symbols to a special division called "Symbols" Could you please look into it? May I help you any further (except the attached test file)? Many thanx, Richard

Updating jitters

Dear consortium, I am using an ConTeXt from Jan-28-06 (ancient) and wish to upgrade. Now things have changed (perl=>ruby, no more texexec.ini etc.), I still use both the pdftex and aleph engines, and I want to do this as cleanly as possible. I am using mswincontext.zip with the xemtex latex tree dumped on top. Whatever advice you can give me on upgrading will be most greatly appreciated! framed parameter

Just curious, because the last of the three examples solves the problem. Why is it that this is allowed in the parameter list of \framed: \framed[frame=on,\iftrue width=3cm\fi]{abc} But this gives an error: \framed[frame=on,\iftrue background=color,backgroundcolor=green\fi]{abc} ! Incomplete \if; all text was ignored after line 42. <inserted text> \fi <*> test.tex emergencyend ? Allthough this works and solves the problem I had: \framed[frame=on,background=\iftrue color\else none \fi,backgroundcolor=green]{abc} Is this somewhat inconsistent behaviour intrinsic to some parameters? I thought all parameters are picked up by a macro and then stashed away. Hans van der Meer
