That does show a fair bit of hyphenation, here. Taco says some wise things, and here are a couple things to insert at the beginning of your text that may help debug. (But, again, I'm no expert in this area.)
\the\hyphenpenalty % (50 on my system)
\showhyphenations{hypertextual}
I put these lines at the top of my file. My resulting dvi file shows these lines: 50 language : en(code:1) font : cmr12 encoding : default mapping : default sample : hypertextual It seems that the hypen penalty is what it should be.
