workaround: install px fonts.
I installed px fonts and if I setup "ec" as default encoding I get the following warning: Warning: pdfetex (file ectt1000): Font ectt1000 at 774 not found {/usr/share/texmf/dvips/base/8r.enc} and Acrobat Reader complains ("error processing page .. (14). However, if I select "8r" as default encoding, everything is fine. So, at least I have soem starting point for further investigation this weird land of fonts :-) Thank you for your input.
