Seems the text is just off the page. Try

% --- PDF with hz
\pdfpagewidth=12cm
\pdfpageheight=12cm
\hsize=8cm
\vsize=8cm
The next text is typeset with hz-alg:
\vskip1cm
\pdfadjustspacing=2
\pdffontexpand\font 25 25 5 autoexpand%
\input tufte
%\end
% --- loading
PDF with a hz-expanded font loaded as figure:
\pdfximage{hz.pdf}
\hbox{\pdfrefximage\pdflastximage}
\end

with \vsize setting. Or extend \pdfpageheight...
