i think that the only reasons were the additional map files, but that can now be done with \pdfmapfile in combination with the default map file; mayb eth ename of the default map file should be configurable in the texmf.cnf file: pdftex.mapfile=whatever.map;more.map that way we have the best of all worlds Hans
