The "width 5mm width 6mm" is totally correct by definition, due to TeX's correctness. E. g. you can also write \hbox width 10pt width 20pt. It's 20 pt long, you don't need to check :-) But I couldn't find a reference in the TeXbook about this feature and what the precendence is.
