Hello, I'm typesetting a bibliography with some Chinese books that have both the English translation and the original title in Chinese ideograms. The Chinese titles contain both full-width commas (U+FF0C) and ordinary commas (U+002C), followed by spaces. Full-width comma has a wide glyph that incorporates some space on the right side; I read on Wikipedia it's a mistake putting a space after it. THE PROBLEM ConTeXt does not break a line after a full-width comma (even inside a "{\cn ... }" group), while it does with an ordinary comma, followed by a space. When there are only full-width commas, sometimes I'll get overfull boxes, because ConTeXt finds no feasible breakpoints. I'm tempted to replace all the full-width commas with ordinary commas followed by a space. Is it possible, or is it a mistake? Or, how do I tell ConTeXt that breaks can occur after full-width commas? Hi, since recently had that nice thread about electrons and Hans announced to rewrite the chemical stuff, I wanted to mention this LaTeX package for drawing chemical structure diagrams in MetaPost: https://ctan.org/pkg/mcf2graph Maybe there’s some usable code? serial letters

How would you approach serial letters, e.g. to all members of a club? (Actually I need to send out donation receipts.) I’d like to use the letter module, since my usual letter design is using it. I can export the addresses to CSV, JSON, Lua tables or whatever or transfer them to a SQLite db. Would it make more sense to read them in Lua and combine this data with a buffer, or to write a single tex file for every letter? I know how to do the latter, but I’d like to learn a more ConTeXt-ish way. Would it make sense to use the bibliographies module? Luametatex: nesting alignments in display math formulas

I'm test driving luametatex. My needs usually extend to expressing formulas in TLA+ using nested display math formulas. Although I have suitable templates for doing this in Mark IV, I can't reproduce these satisfactorily in luametatex. Position of wide tables after split

Hi there, I need a table, which is longer than the textwidth (textwidth + rightmarginwidth + rightmargindistance) and longer than a page. I got the width with the 'textwidth=\dimexpr ...' for the TABLE and the splitting working. The problem: on the first page the positioning is exactly how I want it to be, overflowing into the right margin. But on the following pages it overflows into the left margin. Hyphenated word in html export

Hello, Is there a way to preserve hyphenated words in the html export? When exporting a document with ConTeXt, hyphens in the middle of words seem to be replaced by soft hyphens, which are not displayed by my web browser. Minimal example: \setupbackend[export=yes] \starttext co-worker \stoptext The resulting .html file contains: <div> coworker</div> (There is apparently a soft hyphen between ‘co’ and ‘worker’. The pdf seems to render correctly.) Cheers, Florent

How can a macro check how many items are in a list?

Suppose I have a macro like this: \define[1]\thisismylist{ This list has n items. \startitemize #1\stopitemize } And in the document it might have this: \thisismylist{\item cat\item dog\item tree } How can I make n display three, as there are three items? "This list has 3 items: 1. cat2. dog3. tree I will use this as a means to check if the description before a list needs a plural or not: Read the prompts below: - Do you think cats should be banned from university dormitories?- Should public schools provide free breakfast? And that way, if there is only one prompt, it changes the instructions to be: Read the prompt below: - Do you think cats should be banned from university dormitories? --Joel

Expected behaviour of \definelayout

Hello, I am new to ConTeXt and was trying to understand whether the following behaviour of \definelayout is expected. Consider this example, > \setuplayout[grid=yes] > \showgrid > \definelayout[odd][ > backspace=50mm, > width=90mm, > topspace=20mm, > header=0mm, > footer=0mm, > height=250mm, > ] > > \starttext > \showframe > \dorecurse{10}{\input knuth } > \stoptext which I compile with `context example.tex` (ConTeXt Process Management 1.06, current version: 2024.02.27 09:18, obtained via TeXLive 2024). While the document's layout updates on page 2 (at least, what's being shown by \showframe), the text is typeset using the previous (page 1) layout until it encounters the next \par. This repeats on the transition from page 2 to 3. I have tried to look for an answer in the following texts to no avail, - The layout guide: "It's in the details" - The "ConTEXt Mark IV: an excursion" - The mailing list: Peter Hopcroft chimed in with a similar issue in Dec 2022 (which I did not manage to replicate; it appears the solution was to enforce paragraphs at the layout change?) Is this just the expected behaviour of the layout engine or am I missing something in my preamble? I would very much appreciate your insights, thank you in advance! Louis

What is the current correct way to load fallback fonts?

I've confirmed I can make ConTeXt use my font "FreeSerif.otf", but I can't get it to appear as a fallback. Basically if the character can't be found in EB Garamond, I hope it will use FreeSerif.otf, but generally, I'm just using it for a couple special symbols. How do I correct his so it properly displays the symbols from FreeSerif.otf? --Joel
